Title Search Certificate
A Title Search will provide the requestor with a verification of the current titled owner of record of a motor vehicle in the State of Connecticut. If the requester wants additional information such as odometer readings or a complete ownership history on record, then it should be so noted in Section 3 (Miscellaneous Request) of a Title Copy Records Request (form J-23T).
Please note that if a title to a vehicle has been either lost or stolen, a request for duplicate title must be made.
The person or company requesting a Title Search must complete a Title Copy Records Request (form J-23T). The fee is $20. Certification is an additional $20. The Title Copy Records Request (form J-23T) must have the make, year, and identification number of the vehicle. Additional information such as a registration number or name would also be useful.
When submitting the Title Copy Records Request (form J-23T) the requester must enclose copies of two forms of identification as stated on the back of the form.
Mail completed form and payment to:
Department of Motor Vehicles Title Division 60 State Street Wethersfield, CT 06161
Note: If evidence is needed for tax purposes that ownership of a motor vehicle has been transferred, do not request a Title Search. Instead, request a photocopy of the cancelled title. The fee is $20. Certification is an additional $20.
