Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) are infections that a patient can get from getting treated for an illness. You can get an HAI from being treated in a hospital, an out-patient surgery center, a nursing home, or even in your own home or where you were treated. Before, when most health care was provided in a hospital, the term “hospital-acquired” was used. Today, because many people are treated outside of a hospital, the term “healthcare associated” is used.
