Governor Rell Announces Marketing Funds
Available for Eligible CT Food Businesses
Program Helps Promote
Connecticut Products in Foreign Markets
Governor Rell announced today that small businesses in Connecticut that specialize in Connecticut-grown food products may be eligible for up to $300,000 each in federal funds to help market their products internationally.
The money is available through the Branding Program, which is offered by the Food Export Association of the Northeast. Small businesses using at least 50 percent agricultural products may qualify.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to raise the profile of the Connecticut brand even higher around the world,” Governor Rell said. “We are proud of our high-quality Connecticut Grown products and are confident they will have wide appeal in the global markets.”
This year, eight Connecticut companies have received nearly $50,000, while over $5 million has been awarded to 168 companies throughout the Northeast. Connecticut dips, spreads, biscotti, snacks, bakery items and more are being promoted in countries such as Canada and Mexico.
The program reimburses participants up to half the cost of international marketing and promotion. Eligible expenses include in-store promotions, country-specific promotional materials, participation at foreign trade shows, packaging and labeling modifications to meet foreign import requirements. Funds are available on an annual basis.
To qualify, companies must meet the U.S. Small Business Administration’s definition of a small company and be incorporated in the United States. Agriculture cooperatives and export agents working on behalf of U.S. food companies may also qualify.
Food Export Association of the Northeast USA is a private, nonprofit association of the marketing departments of the Northeast State Departments of Agriculture. It uses federal, state, and industry resources to promote the export of Northeastern food and agricultural products.
Additional information about the program and a pre-qualification application are available online at www.brandedprogram.org. Information is also available by calling the state Department of Agriculture at 860-713-2559 or Food Export Northeast (www.foodexportusa.org) at 215-829-9111.
